The Knot Pulling Tool
Did you ever run around the boat looking for a place to pull your knot tight and someone is standing in your regular place and you need a secure place to pull that 80 lb test leader knot tight? I also like to leave a small loop at the end of my leaders for flexibility and that is a problem to pull by hand even with light leaders.
I needed something snag proof, strong, small and non rusting. When looking through the Boat US on line catalog, I found a very small "Utility Hook" by Perko #128084. I placed my utility hooks on the top side of my center console, port and starboard and they look like part of the boat. Just lately, I found it on Amazon.com but it was out of stock. Please let me know if you find it some place or something like it.
How well you pull a knot is all part of tying a good knot! I use only Uni-Knots and like to leave a loop on all my leader connections to make them more flexible. To leave a loop when tying a Uni-Knots, I tie the knot and place the loop over the utility hook and pull it tight. You will be able to feel that telltale click that tells you the knot is locked when pulling the tag end. The loop may close when fighting a big fish but you have already made your point. On light lines you will be able to stop bending or damaging hooks and barbs. On the heavy stuff you will have a sound and convenient place to pull your knots with loops or not. Keep it wet !
