Permit

Permit have larger eyes and longer, darker fins than 
Pompano.

Pompano

All four fish may have some yellow on them but only the jacks have teeth.

Jack Crevalle

Jacks have a larger mouth with teeth and a black spot on the gill cover, plus a bony tail.

The difference may seem obvious when side by side, but if you have only one fish and it has teeth, you don't have anything in the pompano family.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Palometa

Description: gray to blue-green on top of head and along the back; bright silvery sides; yellow on breast; elongated dorsal and anal fins, dusky or black with bluish edges; deep body, with four narrow bars high on the sides, and traces of a fifth nearer the tail; no scutes

Size: rarely over 1 pound, reported to 3 pounds
