BLACKFIN TUNA Thunnus atlanticus
Size: The average would be about 25 lbs as in this photo.
Distribution: Western tropical and warm temperate Atlantic waters from Brazil north via the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico to Bermuda and sometimes Cape Hatteras.
General: A primarily surface-feeding fish, eating plankton, squid, small bait fish. Excellent on light tackle when taken trolling or with live bait. The flesh is tasty and has commercial importance.
IGFA All-Tackle: 45 lb 8 oz. Key West Fla.
The blackfin tuna is the only tuna we catch regularly, but is usually a by-catch and not a target fish, due to the small schools and short visits.
